“Healer heal thyself” ~ Luke 4:23
This very moment brings a great realization. Those elementary school days spent in the classrooms of Our Lady of Perpetual Help filled me up with love of the world described to me by the sisters. That world is the world of the unseen. The world of morality and emotion, of codes of conduct, of truth and punishment. It’s the world of higher authority beyond the scope of humans.
In my artwork I use visual tools to make real the emotional realities that we often overlook. I explore what the realm before birth might be like. I sense it as a current that runs through and with the world of the living. In some way this dream world that no one recollects is always with me always reminding me that it all matters. Dreams are valid. Life is worth living, people are valid and our dreams are worth saving.
Can I make something that will help humanity? Sure. Even if it’s just something pretty to look at while working on surviving the ordeal. Something to map out where we are going. To the divine promise. I make art about surviving life in a healthy way, not resenting death, preserving responsibility for living a life of awareness and not distortion. Art is a significant tool that can be used to identify the unseen emotions, fears, feelings, distortions in perception so those distortions don’t become the demons which haunt the living. It’s art as exorcism.
