As was the case with Sandy in Grease and Tai in Clueless, summer is a great reason to get a dream makeover. Maybe it’s your hair, clothes or both, the warm weather is a good reason to take some aesthetic adventures. You can always reset at the start of the Fall season.
For Summer ’18, we saw many trends on the international runways: feather dresses; PVC trench coats; pink bobs; and chalk striped, fringe bangs. Not every trend will work on every body. Let’s focus on a few accessible choices that won’t alienate you from your friends at the beach club.
Our two picks for a new summer haircut are the pixie and the bowl cut. Designers who showed different variations of this short, choppy style include Balenciaga, Celine, Carven and Tom Ford. No longer reserved for the tomboys, pixies are easy and sexy. This style will accentuate your cheekbones, it will give relief during the summer heat, it will take care of all your split ends from previous dyes, and, above all, with the change of shape and dramatic shedding of baggage, it will give you a fresh start emotionally and physically. Our other pick, the bowl cut, was seen at Esteban Cortazar, Guy Laroche and Natasha Zinko. This circular, voluminous cut was popular with both sexes in the 60s. A modern take on this vintage look could be your movie make-over. Because the bowl cut is not as short as the pixie, it’s a good choice, with more styling options, and a less prolonged grow-out.
When at the store this season, keep in mind that there are many great alternatives to flirty, flowy printed (sun-)dresses. Channel your inner Sandy and take a risk!
For wardrobe let’s focus on three trends that you can wear independently or mix together at different summer events. Whether for hanging out downtown, or picnicking in the park, our summer picks are fringe, lilac-pastels, and dressy shorts.
Fringe is all about the right pieces and proportion. Don’t let fringe overwhelm you. Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, and Dior all showed variations on the trend. We love a fringe skirt and suggest it paired with and oversized tank and flat mules. These pieces will easily transform you into boho mademoiselle.
Pastels were in full bloom from Paris to NY during the runways shows for this season. We saw soft hues from the likes of Tibi, Victoria Beckham, Michael Kors, and Pamela Roland. Our favorites are floral tones of lilac and lavender. We recommend coupling a maxi shirt-dress with striped flats.
Last on our summer trend list: loose-fitting, dressy shorts. But not all suited up like with the ladies who lunch. We love a carefree ease, closer to street-style. A plaid short with a contrasting plaid blouse, finished with pastel pink sneakers from Common Projects.
Fashion and hair don’t need to be cerebral choices. You’ll be most confident and beautiful if you feel comfortable and genuine. Be inspired by the lightness of the summer breezes. Simple fun changes, no matter how big or small, can leave a lasting impression. Maybe we’ll see you in June on the boardwalk with a pixie cut, in a maxi shirt-dress, gliding along in your new flats.
